ORBIT - 01.png

ORBIT - Film by Sean Doran with footage by NASA - February 9, 2018
The duration of this film -- 92 minutes and 39 seconds -- is the time it takes for the International Space Station to orbit our planet once. The footage is playing in real-time as it would be seen from aboard the ISS. The film captures the beauty of the planet we are given, and the achievement that is possible with collective dreams and collective effort. The ISS has been in orbit since 1998, and continuously inhabited since 2000--two decades.

Two-year Recap

Friends and fellow Neuros, thank you for being a part of this community! We are still riding a wave of good feelings from Neurosummit 6 and are already starting to get excited for Neurosummit 7!

This is Neurotransmission no.24, which means we have been at this for two years! We have covered two Neurosummits and many topics like Utopias, Cults, Trust, Inclusivity, and Cyborgs. As we evaluate 2018 along with our two years of dispatches, we are reminded that an annual cycle is simultaneously a long and a short period of time. How did we do this past year? What are our goals for the upcoming bracket of time? And how does all of this fit into a larger set of intents?

Sloane Trugman’s concept of a “Return on Intentionality” is on our minds as we are thinking about what Neuro and the Neurotransmission dispatches mean to us and to you. We all have a longing for belonging to a community within which we feel safe and secure to share and to take some ownership in. We strive to create that space with Neuro and are grateful for this community that so many of you have helped to shape!

So if you have any thoughts about how Neurotransmission could be better, we would love to hear them!

At the close of this year we would like to share two wonderful and inspirational reads about working hard for a better world and dreaming big:

Room 250
Essay by Haraldur Thorleifsson - October 29, 2018
This essay was pointed out by our fellow Neuro, Pia. It is a wonderfully open and personal account of how much constant vigilance and work it takes to continuously do better. This is an acknowledgement of our eternal imperfections and the importance of striving the overcome them, because the beauty is not in achieving that perfection, but in being open and honest about our shortcomings and in the daily work to overcome them.

Why We Need Utopian Fiction Now More Than Ever
Essay by Eleanor Tremeer - November 7, 2018
Just as a certain amount of cynicism sheds light on potential dangers, a certain amount of naivete helps propel our imaginations into aspirational futures.

“Hope is radical.”

Finally, we want to reiterate our encouragement from a year ago, for open, inquisitive and patient conversation because it is even more important today than before. Our increasingly connected world means we are closer to each other than we realize. The person next to us may be a stranger, but they have more in common with us than not. So please talk with the people around you--especially the ones with whom you disagree! Openness to a diversity of opinions and respect for differences are paramount to a well-functioning and equitable culture.

And if Neurotransmission pleasantly tickles your neurons, please share it! We wish you a happy, prosperous, and peaceful new year! Until next time ✌️!
