Community Center

A community center located near the Currituck Beach Lighthouse on the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The project interests were to identify a thickened edge that responded to various micro-conditions within the immediate site as well as the larger site of the outer banks as a thickened protective edge between the ocean and the sound.

The building is a linear rhythm of structural frames that lightly touch the ground and elevate the main spaces up to the tree-line and safe from floods. The ground plane remains continuous and open to recreational activities while the rooftop provides uninterrupted views over the trees with only the nearby lighthouse as a significant landmark. The lighthouse always remains referenced from below and within the building via the primary circulation ramps.
